Why Does a Phase Protection Relay Turn Red and Stop a Hydraulic Inspection Lift?

A phase protection relay is installed inside the electrical control box of a three-phase hydraulic inspection lift to protect the motor from phase loss and other abnormal power supply conditions.

However, one of our customers recently experienced an issue: the phase protection relay would suddenly turn red, preventing the inspection lift from operating. After restarting the electrical control box, the relay would return to green, and the machine could resume normal operation.

This raised an important troubleshooting question: Is the phase protection relay responding to a genuine phase-loss problem, or is it reacting to a temporary voltage fluctuation?

What Is the Purpose of a Phase Protection Relay?

In a three-phase power supply, if one phase is lost while the motor continues operating, the motor may experience excessive current and overheating, potentially leading to motor damage.

A phase protection relay monitors the power supply and can stop the equipment when it detects abnormal conditions, such as phase loss or phase sequence errors, depending on the relay model.

Its purpose is to protect the motor and improve electrical safety.

Why Does the Relay Suddenly Turn Red?

During our troubleshooting investigation, we considered the possibility that a slight voltage reduction on one phase could trigger the protection relay.

For example, when another single-phase electrical device operates on the same power supply, it may cause a temporary voltage drop or voltage imbalance. If the phase protection relay has a sensitive voltage threshold, it may interpret this condition as an abnormal power supply and activate its protection function. A similar supply issue can also explain why low input voltage causes VFD faults in lift systems.

In this situation, the customer's inspection lift may stop working even though there is no permanent phase loss.

The actual cause must be confirmed through voltage measurements and the relay's fault indicators or specifications. A red light alone does not prove that the supply has lost a phase.

Why Does Restarting the Power Supply Restore Normal Operation?

In this case, restarting the electrical control box causes the phase protection relay to return to its green status, allowing the machine to operate again.

This behavior may indicate that the relay has entered a protection or fault-latched state. Depending on the specific relay design, a power reset may be required to clear the fault.

The exact reset behavior depends on the relay model and its operating instructions. Therefore, it is important to verify whether the relay supports automatic recovery, manual reset, or power-cycle reset.

Is It Necessary to Remove the Phase Protection Relay?

During troubleshooting, we considered whether removing the phase protection relay would reduce unnecessary interruptions.

A genuine phase-loss event may be relatively uncommon after a correctly installed system has been commissioned. However, the consequences of motor operation under phase-loss conditions can be serious.

For this reason, we do not recommend removing the phase protection relay simply because nuisance trips are inconvenient. A better approach is to identify the cause of the trips and select a protection solution that balances motor safety with reliable operation.

Possible solutions include:

  • Checking the three-phase voltage under different operating conditions.

  • Measuring voltage imbalance when other electrical equipment is switched on.

  • Confirming the relay's voltage thresholds and fault-reset behavior.

  • Checking the wiring, terminals, and incoming power supply.

  • Considering a suitable phase-monitoring relay with appropriate settings and reset functions.

Clear diagnostic feedback can shorten this process; see how a PLC status screen makes lift troubleshooting easier.

Any changes to the protection system should be evaluated by a qualified electrical professional and follow the applicable equipment safety requirements.

Conclusion

A phase protection relay plays an important role in protecting the motor of a hydraulic inspection lift. However, protection devices should be selected and configured appropriately to avoid unnecessary shutdowns caused by temporary power supply abnormalities.

When a relay suddenly turns red, the solution is not simply to remove the protection device. The first step is to identify whether the problem comes from phase loss, voltage imbalance, relay settings, wiring, or another electrical issue.

Reliable lifting equipment requires both effective protection and stable, practical operation. Through careful troubleshooting and appropriate component selection, we can work toward a safer and more dependable lifting system.
